Safe Driving 101
Operating a motor vehicle is a privilege. Carrying auto coverage is the law. Here are a few skills that can be attained to make you a safer, more responsible driver.
Time judgment prior to completing a maneuver at an intersection is a key to intersection safety. The rate at which a vehicle closes on an intersection and the determination of the necessary speed to complete the maneuver safely are factors that must be taken into account prior to committing to the maneuver.
You should also be experienced in judging the speed of other vehicles. The ability to judge the speed of other vehicles and their distance in order to ensure that two or more vehicles do not enter the intersection at the same time is an asset when operating a vehicle.
DTA’s Separate and Compromise driving strategies may be utilized to adequately assess intersection safety. Furthermore, the DTA IPDE process affords drivers the opportunity to Predict opposing vehicle maneuvers based upon their “worst case” driving action.
Choice of an appropriate traffic gap in which to enter or cross traffic is the final point to evaluate the adequacy of necessary time and space prior to proceeding through an intersection. Usually, at a controlled intersection, the traffic gap is provided by drivers’ adherence to right of way laws and traffic control devices.
However, at uncontrolled intersections, adequate traffic gaps at intersections are secured primarily by drivers’ adherence to right of way laws without the aid of traffic control devices. As introduced earlier in this unit, the IPDE process may be utilized to assist you in the decision making process in both of these situations.
Using IPDE, you may process the determination of an adequate intersection traffic gap. If you are not familiar with IPDE, here is a summary of its components. 1) IDENTIFY whether the necessary time and space is available to complete the desired intersection maneuver; 2) PREDICT the worst possible consequences to your safety by assessing other drivers’ possible (worst case scenario) actions; 3) DECIDE when an appropriate traffic gap is evident; and 4) EXECUTE a driving maneuver through the intersection in a safe and efficient manner by adhering to right of way laws.
Correct judgment on time to perform a maneuver and the speed of other vehicles are abilities possessed by skilled drivers. Having these skills can prevent you from being involved in an accident and save you money and time.
